Citizens of African-American descent have been enslaved, exploited and abused in both the southern and northern hemispheres of the New World. 2012 is the International Year of People of African Descent. The United Nations has designated 2011 as the International Year of People of African Descent. The year aims at strengthening the integration of people of African descent into all aspects of society.
